Title : Architecture and Implementation of the CAMERA Metagenomics Server

Abstract:

The CAMERA (Community Cyberinfrastructure for Advanced Microbial Ecology
Research and Analysis, http://www.camera.calit2.net ) is powered by a
high-performance computer and storage complex that enables analysis of
a vast array of biocomplexity data. While end users can manipulate the
data over the web CAMERA will eventually permit scientists to connect
their local laboratory computers directly to the CAMERA database and
tools using the National LambdaRail, Internet2's NewNet, or
international optical circuits.

In this talk, we will look at the various components of the
infrastructure - compute servers, web services, web-portals,
storage, user registration, database servers, how they interlock
to build a functioning complex system, and how we use Rocks to
define nearly all components. We will examine critical features
of some of these components, where there are dependencies,
and which software technologies developers have chosen to
implement each major subsystem. The production CAMERA complex itself
is deployable by a single administrator and consists of 512 compute
CPUs, 200TB of raw storage, and various internet-facing servers
all interconnected by one- and ten-gigabit ethernet.

BIO

Dr. Papadopoulos recevied his PhD in 1993 from UC Santa Barbara in
Electrical Engineering. He spent 5 years at Oak Ridge National
Laboratory as part of the the Parallel Virtual Machine ( PVM) development
team. He is currently the Program Director of Grid and Cluster
Computing at the San Diego Supercomputer Center. Dr. Papadopoulos is
deeply involved in
key research projects including the Biomedical Informatics Research
Network (BIRN), OptIPuter, the Geosciences Network (GEON), the NSF
Middleware Initiative (NMI), The National Biomedical Computation
Resource(NBCR), and the Pacific Rim Applications and Grid
Middlware Assembly (PRAGMA). He is also well known for the
development of the open source Rocks Cluster toolkit, which has
installed base of
1000s of clusters. His research interests revolve around
distributed and clustered systems and how they can be used more
effectively in an
expanding bandwidth-rich environment.
Dr. Papadopoulos is co-investigator on the CAMERA project funded by the
Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
