概要:
The Web as a global information system has revolutionized everyday
life. As one of the most disruptive technologies of the last decades,
the Web was responsible for drastic technological, economical, and
even social developments: today it forms the main source of
information as well as entertainment anytime, anywhere. It connects
people via social platforms, but is also the most influential
infrastructure for commerce and business. To facilitate this, the
tight integration of information retrieval technology and innovative
data management techniques was necessary. Since then, the Web has
prospered, diversified and developed into the largest and omnipresent
information source and, what is more, a meaningful knowledge space.

However, the basic interaction and navigation methods addressing
text-based content on the Web as well as in the underlying databases
and information systems have been progressing comparatively
slowly. Even modern systems mostly rely on techniques for retrieving,
finding, and navigating information that were developed decades
ago. Techniques like e.g. SQL queries, hierarchical categorization,
list browsing, keyword-based filtering, or simple IR-style keyword
searches are still predominant as sole method of accessing content or
services. Given the semantics behind and the connections between data
items on the Web, there is however a wide variety of applicable
methods for improving and personalizing access paradigms. Focused
information extraction working hand in hand with domain-centered
conceptual models for representation is already beginning to change
query processing.

This talk focuses on such alternative approaches for user-centered
information access going beyond categories and keywords. It introduces
querying with concepts based on individual user perceptions or
sentiments, using crowd-sourcing for query processing, or employing
analogical reasoning for the intuitive communication of information
needs.

Short CV:
Wolf-Tilo Balke currently holds the chair for information systems at
Technische Universität Braunschweig, Germany, and serves as a director
of L3S Research Center at Leibniz Universität Hannover,
Germany. Before, he was the associate research director of L3S and a
research fellow at the University of California at Berkeley, USA. His
research is in the area of databases and information service
provisioning, including personalized query processing, retrieval
algorithms, preference-based retrieval and ontology-based discovery
and selection of services. Wolf-Tilo Balke is the recipient of two
Emmy-Noether-Grants of Excellence by the German Research Foundation
(DFG) and the Scientific Award of the University Foundation Augsburg,
Germany. He has received his BSc and MSc degree in mathematics and a
PhD in computer science from University of Augsburg, Germany.

Dr. Christoph Lofi

Research Interests: Information Systems, Semantic Query Processing,
Crowd Sourcing, Personalization

Short CV:
Christoph Lofi is currently a post-doctoral researcher at National
Institute of Informatics, Tokyo, Japan. His research focus is on
exploring novel database query paradigms, incorporating crowd-sourcing
into information systems research, and query personalization. Before
his time at NII, he worked as a post-doctoral researcher at Technische
Universität Braunschweig, Germany. He is a recipient of a FIT grant by
the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). 2005 he graduated in
computer science at Technische Universität Kaiserslautern, Germany,
where he also worked at the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental
Software Engineering (IESE), before moving to the Collaborative
Software Development Laboratory at University of Hawaii, Honolulu,
USA. In 2006 he started PhD studies at the L3S Research Center,
Hannover, Germany and from 2008 worked at Technische Universität
Braunschweig, Germany where he received his PhD in 2011.
