演題: Data Science and Information Science: A Human Centric View

講演者: Gary Marchionini
Dean and Cary C. Boshamer Professor
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Abstract:
Data Science is an emerging field that applies theory and techniques from statistics, computer science, and information science to problems in other domains. Enormous volumes, varieties, and velocities of data arise in digital environments ranging from health and science to business and entertainment and the technical means to leverage and manage these data the development of data science as a field and practice. For data science work to be effective, it is crucial that domain experts and policy makers focus on GOOD data, that their applications of data science are driven by key questions and policies, and that decisions, outputs, and workflows are documented for future access. The principles of information science related to user needs assessment, the data life cycle, and curation are essential to effective data science. This talk will highlight key human-centric challenges in data science ranging from blurred boundaries in digital assets to data quality and preservation.
