A thing can basically be any physical object that has embedded sensors and/or actuators and is connected to the internet. Although the term is mainly associated with end consumer products, where more and more intelligent things are changing our daily lives, there is a similar trend taking shape in the industrial area, where machines and devices are also becoming increasingly intelligent and connected. In industry, we refer to the “Industrial Internet”, “Cyber Physical Systems” or, in Germany, “Industry 4.0”. Governments around the globe are taking this trend seriously and investing heavily in research activities. In recent years, many projects in IoT have made initial progress in solutions for the smart logistics, smart home, industrial automation, connected health, smart ports, smart agriculture, etc. In this talk, I will present the background and state of arts in IoT as well as its applications, challenges, and opportunities from software companies perspective.
