Aim and Scope Mobile Information Retrieval (MobIR’08) is a timely workshop concerned with the indexing and retrieval of textual, audio and visual information such as text, graphics, animation, sound, speech, image, video and their various possible combinations for use in mobile devices with wireless network connectivity. The proliferation of wireless and mobile devices such as personal digital assistants and mobile phones has created a large demand for mobile information content as well as effective mobile information retrieval techniques. New technologies are needed for representing, modeling, indexing, and retrieving mobile data. In particular, we need robust techniques to index/retrieve and compress mobile information, new scalable browsing algorithms allowing access to very large mobile databases, and semantic visual interfaces integrating the above components into unified mobile browsing and retrieval systems. The objective of this workshop is to provide a single forum for researchers and technologists to discuss the state-of-the-art, present their contributions, and set future directions in emerging innovative research for mobile information retrieval. Topics of Interest Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following: • Content-based extraction, indexing, annotating, and retrieval of mobile data • Efficient retrieval models and query processing of mobile information from distributed databases • Extraction of useful semantics in mobile information for indexing and retrieval • Knowledge discovery through content and keyword fusion in mobile summarization, indexing and retrieval • Mobile retrieval across multiple media types, network conditions, and user preferences • Scalable browsing algorithms for large mobile databases • Automatic summarization and personalization in mobile information • Efficient management and information mining of mobile metadata • Mobile peer tagging and knowledge propagation • Mobile learning and user profiling for mobile information retrieval • Digital rights management for mobile information retrieval • Secure and trusted information retrieval in mobile wireless networks • Spatial data management, mining spatial data generated by mobile users • Location based search for mobile devices Submission We seek three kinds of submissions related to mobile information retrieval: • Full technical papers – up to 8 pages • Short technical papers and position papers – up to 4 pages • Prototype descriptions – 2 page description of the application Submitted papers should be in English using the ACM Conference style, see "the ACM template page" http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html, using the "Option 2" style. Papers must not exceed 8 pages in 9 point font and must be submitted as pdf files. Papers must be submitted electronically, via the submission website https://cmt.research.microsoft.com/MobIR2008 on or before the submission deadline. Workshop Publications All accepted papers will be published in the proceedings of theworkshop. The proceedings will be printed and made available at the workshop.
Selected revised papers from the workshop will be invited for consideration of publication in a special issue of a leading related journal and as a book chapter (to be confirmed). Important Dates Submissions due: 26 May 2008 Notification of acceptance: 16 June 2008 Camera-ready manuscripts due: 25 June 2008 Workshop date: 24 July 2008 Organizing Committee Kap Luk Chan, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) Xing Xie, Microsoft Research Asia (China) Wang-Chien Lee, Penn State University (USA) Minoru Etoh, NTT DoCoMo (Japan) Flora S.
