The VLDB conference reflects the increasing challenges of an ever more complex technical world. The scope for submissions of original results has extended from all technical aspects of data management to the infrastructures of which databases have become an essential part, and to applications which heavily depend on database technology. We invite submission of technical papers, papers with visionary contributions, proposals for panels, tutorials, and demonstrations, all of which present the most critical issues and views on practical leading-edge database technology, applications, and techniques. IMPORTANT DATES February 11, 2003 - Abstract Submission Deadline February 18, 2003 - Full Paper Submission Deadline March 1, 2003 - Panel, Demonstr. & Tutorial Subm. Deadline April 15, 2003 - Ph.D. Workshop Submission Deadline May 5, 2003 - Notification of Acceptance June 15, 2003 - Camera Ready Papers due September 9, 2003 - Conference opens TOPICS OF INTEREST VLDB 2003 invites submissions on new contributions in the field of data management, including novel usage of data management technology. VLDB 2003 strongly encourages the submission of creative work that goes beyond improvements of already known results. Submissions may cover novel approaches in data management, visions that present new viewpoints and challenges, or a description of the implementation or deployment of advanced database technology in an industrial or application setting. Furthermore, since new challenging applications appear on the horizon, papers that describe those with respect to their technical substance, their impact, and their importance and relate them to today's database technology are also solicited. To accommodate the spectrum of papers, VLDB 2003 Program Committee will be organized into three tracks: (1) Core Database System Technology, (2) Infrastructure for Information Systems, (3) Industrial Applications & Experience. Accordingly, like in 2002 VLDB 2003 will divide the Program Committee by subject area rather than by geographical region as in earlier years. Nonetheless, we remain committed to maintain the geographical balance in all aspects of the conference. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Research Papers: For each paper, authors must first submit an abstract by February 11, 2003 (9:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time - PST). Full papers must be submitted by February 18, 2003 (9:00 p.m. PST). Papers must be submitted electronically using the conference management tool. Detailed information on the paper submission procedure is available there in January 2003. Further questions may be addressed to the appropriate PC chairs: Serge Abiteboul (Core Database Technology Program, Serge.Abiteboul [at] inria.fr), Mike Carey (Infrastructure for Information System Program, carey [at] bea.com), and Pat Selinger (Industrial Applications & Experience Program, pgs [at] us.ibm.com). Papers will be judged according to their category, so authors should give careful consideration to placing their papers appropriately. Papers must not be published or under consideration to be published elsewhere. Nominations for topics and speakers for keynotes are welcome. Tutorial Proposals: Tutorial proposals must clearly identify the intended audience. Tutorials whose audience is broader than the database research community are encouraged. Proposals must be no more than five pages, and must include enough material to provide both the scope and depth of the material to be covered. The intended length of the tutorial (1.5 or 3 hours) should also be indicated. Proposals should be submitted electronically by March 1, 2003 (9:00 p.m. PST) to: Rakesh Agrawal, ragrawal [at] almaden.ibm.com. The submission must contain the name, e-mail address, telephone number, and fax number of the speaker. Tutorial presentations will be made available to VLDB participants, and must be ready for publication by July 1, 2003 (9:00 p.m. PST). Panel Proposals: Panel proposals should address controversial issues and must be debate-oriented rather than a series of short presentations. The proposal should include the topic title, a short statement about the importance and novelty of the panel and format to be followed, in particular how the audience is to be included. Panel proposals should be submitted electronically by March 1, 2003 (9:00 p.m. PST) to: Stefano Ceri, ceri [at] elet.polimi.it. Demonstration Proposals: Demonstration proposals should focus on new technology, advances in applying databases, or new techniques. Demonstration proposals must be no more than four pages, and should give a short description of the demonstrated system, its significance and contribution. Proposals should be submitted electronically by March 1, 2003 (9:00 p.m. PST) to: Norman Paton, norm [at] cs.man.ac.uk. Short papers describing demos will appear in the Proceedings. Co-location of Workshops and Conferences: We are happy to have events, workshops, and conferences that are co-located with VLDB 2003 before of after (but not during) the conference. We are happy to help synchronize different workshops in case of overlap in content and time. Such synchronization will happen for the then known workshops by the end of January. Notification of such events should be directed to: Gunter Saake, saake [at] iti.cs.uni-magdeburg.de Ph.D. workshop: The workshop brings together Ph.D. students for presenting their ongoing research in databases and related fields. Papers of 5 pages maximum should be submitted by April 15, 2003 (9:00 p.m. PST) to: Marc Scholl, Marc.Scholl@uni- konstanz.de.
